\section{Introduction}
This adaptation of D.E.~Knuth's {\tt METAFONT} is based to a large extent
on the change file of {\tt sbtex}. It is designed for 640K PC's whose {\tt RAM} has
not been decimated by memory resident software. The author of {\tt sbmf}
benefitted from communication with Eberhard Mattes, whose PC versions of \TeX\
and {\tt METAFONT} cope better with limited {\tt RAM} than their {\tt sb}
counterparts. This release upgrades to {\tt MF}2.71 and sets a correct
value for the {\tt DOS} return code in the case of fatal errors.
